Introducing the new baby kits

Day 1 with the new babies! Jelly Bean was supposed to give up the “Jelly” part to his new friend, but we like his name as is. I call him JB (goes well with BB and PB), and many people here call him Jelly Belly because of his big belly. So he’s keeping his full name. The new babies are KitKat (girl) and Snickers (boy). They are the Easter kittens! They were a little scared with the changes yesterday, so we will wait to introduce them to JB for a few days. Too many changes can be very stressful. They were a bit nervous with me too, and didn’t eat well last night. I was carrying them around in a makeshift pouch, so they’d get used to being with me and with my scent. After a while, they relaxed and fell asleep in my kangaroo pouch. Phoebe is so ready to nanny them too!

A background story. I cannot say with certainty that this is what really happened, but we suspect this is how the kittens ended up with our rescue. Someone “found” and brought in a pregnant cat that needed an emergency surgery to a vet. The compassionate vet delivered 6 kittens (I believe for free), the person took the mom cat back, and left the kittens with the vet. I was told this was quite common where owners bring in pregnant cats, claiming they were strays. A lot of rescue friendly vets would help these cats for free and some people take advantage of that. Again, I don’t know if that’s what happened with this litter, but the moral of the story is “Spay/Neuter”. The kitten season is around the corner, and all the shelters will soon be full. Rescues will also be full. Where will those kittens go then?

Back to happy thoughts. If all goes well, Phoebe will get to meet JB this week after he gets his check up and his shots. I will slowly introduce JB to KitKat and Snickers. I’ll let BB do what BB wants to do, as she usually needs extra time to adjust to new changes.

All three will be available for adoption in a couple of months. Stay tuned!
